Propaganda is a type of information that tries to manipulate people’s emotions rather than their logic or reasoning. It uses a variety of techniques that can be grouped into seven categories: name-calling, glittering generalities, transfer, plain folk, card-stacking, and bandwagoning. These are all powerful techniques that can be used separately or in combination to persuade people into changing their beliefs and behaviors.

Often, propaganda is not even intentionally false, but is simply trying to raise or lower the salience of a certain topic. For example, if a group of politicians or soldiers want to change the discussion from their agenda to a different one, they might send out information about the previous battle that swayed public opinion or a story of how heroic someone was in a certain situation.

While propaganda is usually associated with governments, activist groups, and companies, it can also be used by religious organizations and individuals. It is distinct from fake news in that it is one-way communication that can be controlled by the source, while most fake news relies on social media to spread and is harder to control.

Children are particularly susceptible to propaganda, because they do not yet have the critical thinking skills or contextual comprehension that would help them determine if a message is biased or not. Moreover, they are often highly imitative and easily swayed by other people’s beliefs. This makes them an easy target for political campaigns and the like.
